I wrote an article a few months back about Time Machine over TCP to a Linux NAS. I linked to a few how-to’s that walked you through compilation and setting up your mac to accept remote volumes for backup devices.
I have little experience creating deb packages – but I figured I would release my working Ubuntu specific deb for others to test out and see how it goes. I have tested it on a fresh install :
Linux laptop 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 00:28:35 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
Here is what I had to do to install it :
wget http://geekhut.org/downloads/netatalk_2.0.4~beta2-5ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i netatalk_2.0.4~beta2-5ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo apt-get -f install
You can edit your shares in /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default
For instance, the last two lines of mine look like :
/media/shared/Backups/ "Time Machine"
/media/shared/ "Shared"
You will also want to add the following to the bottom of /etc/netatalk/afpd.conf :
- -transall -uamlist uams_randnum.so,uams_dhx.so -nosavepassword -advertise_ssh
Once you have it all set up, you will probably want to advertise this service on the network as an Apple device. Copy this file into /etc/avahi/services/afpd.service.
Restart avahi : sudo /etc/init.d/avahi restart
Restart netatalkd : sudo /etc/init.d/netatalk restart
You should now see your new AFP server in your apple’s finder sidebar. If not click Finder => Go => Connect to Server and type afp://your-hostname.
Anyway I hope the file works for you, I can not guarantee anything and assume NO liability if it shits the bed. Give it a shot and let me know how it turns out for you.
This morning I added Growl notifications to Asteristickies using a wonderful PHP class found here.
You do not need to add any third party software to make this work, presuming you have Growl already installed. Configuration is minimal and notifications can be sent to any routable hostname . address.
I think that it is ridiculous people are requesting VMWare console ported to Mac as it really is not necessary.
During my last trip to Windsor to visit a friend we had a couple Hobgoblins and I left my power supply there. We drove back up to Toronto late at night after winning $200 at Windsor Raceway and I realized as soon as I got home that I left my PSU there, I swore a lot.
I decided to have it shipped back up here for about $15 which wasn’t so bad and my mom generously offered to pick it up and ship it instead of having to have Corvillus box it up. Well she left it in the front seat of her car (which has zipper windows) so locking doors is pretty useless. She left it there so she wouldn’t forget to ship it in the morning (I love my mom).
Well I guess some mischievous theives thought the 5 year old Mac power supply would be useful without the laptop so they decided to heist that and her brand new Chocolate phone. Well her phone was replaced which is all good unfortunately now I have to find a used 65W Mac power supply on Ebay for almost 3 times the price of shipping.
I am now stuck using Linux (Ughh) after switching to a quality Apple product I feel kind of dirty in this environment. I am no fanboy however my Powerbook made me feel happy. Anyway I am going to do some shopping now.
PS. If I ever find out who stole my PSU I will break their nose, that is a promise. Don’t f*ck with a man and his Apple.
