If You Haven’t Tried These, Try Them
I am very passionate about food and drink, specifically imported beer and unique cuts of different types of meats. I once worked as a butcher at a local meat shop and loved every minutes of it, especially having a fellow employee mark 2 Lbs of Beef tenderloin as ground beef ($4 compared to $40).
Anyway I have compiled a list of unique beers that you may or may not have tried, however I strongly recommend.
1. Hobgoblin Ale
Tasting Note
Amber brown colour; mocha/coffee, spicy hops and almond aromas; chocolate/coffee, smoke and hoppy flavours; long finish.
Serving Suggestion
Shepherd’s pie; burgers; stews.
A very Irish-ish type brew (even though it is English) : the LCBO is right, stew is perfect with this delicious dark ale.
2. Black Oak - Nut Brown Ale
Tasting Note
Dark amber brown colour; roasted aromas with nut and chocolate notes; rich malty flavours, quite smooth, with well balanced hops.
Serving Suggestion
Stews and curries.
Very similar to the above however a bit cheaper. This ale is brewed right here in Oakville, Ontario and is a must for any one in southern Ontario to give a try, I am considering sending a “poverty pack” (6 pack) to the boys at Digg.
3. Sapporo Japanese Beer
Tasting Note
Golden colour; delicate dried grass/herbal aroma; lively effervescence; balanced with clean bitter hoppy finish.
Serving Suggestion
Lightly spiced finger food or sushi
Boys and girls alike can enjoy this dry, delicious import. The funniest part is that the guy at the liquor store knows what I am getting even before I get to the counter, he waill say “Thinking Japanese again eh?”… Good beer.
4. Asahi Super Dry
Tasting Note
Pale golden yellow; light grainy/fruity nose; light-bodied with a clean dry finish
Serving Suggestion
Sushi and Sichuan dishes.
Very much like Sapporo however I find it to be less dry considering it is called “super dry”, give this a try, it is priced better than sapporo but doesn’t have thet dry kick in the face.
5. My Favourite : Lucky and Totato Juice
WTF? Beer and tomato juice? Yeah that is right - it is delicious. You are probably thinking “eww like a ceasar” - NO, not Clamato juice. You need to buy Heinz canned tomato juice and some cheap ass beer. Mix it 50 / 50 and all of a sudden you are enjoying something you have most likely never had before. Ask your grandparents - they know all about it, they used to call it a “Redy Eye” and some mix it up with ice but it is good, trust me. It is also some times referred to as a “Shanty”, no matter what you call it, you will love it.
It is a safe and healthy drink to be addicted to, in fact I am going to get some for my radio show tonight!
